At Valladolid, Sonae Arauco is investigating new wood solutions for construction
This Research and Development (R&D) initiative aims to bring together technology centres and companies in the search for new composites and effective wood solutions for construction, from endogenous resources and recycled materials. This project, which has recently begun and will last until 2025, also brings together Miranda de Ebro Technology Center and CESEFOR foundation (Centro de Servicios y promoción Forestal y de su Industria de Castilla y León).
The research comes from a 212.623€ financing from the ICE of Castilla y León obtained by Sonae Arauco of Valladolid. Among the different goals of the partnership is the development of new wooden structural elements that optimize the material and its mechanical characteristics, as well as the minimization of thermal losses. These elements will be the skeleton for the development of new industrialized construction panels, with high-performance thermal insulation, contributing to energy-efficient buildings.
These panels propose not only to integrate the construction of single-family houses but also the construction of high-rise buildings. Consequently, two construction solutions are to be developed: prefabricated façades for high-rise buildings and a fully industrialized construction system based on biomaterials, namely wood and straw.
The realization of this project meets several R&D standards in biomaterials, as the basis for all developments, the use of endogenous resources from the Castilla y León areas (such as wood and straw), energy efficiency through CO2 reduction, and circularity and recycling of materials.
